EMERALD TWILIGHT – How DC Comics BROKE Green Lantern

I know this is about green lantern, but I just wanted to say I’ll never forget when superman died. It was crazy. It was on the news and stuff like a real person.

Second half, the rushed resolution of Green Lantern 0 is unforgivable IMO. It was all rushed but Marz is a good writer. Zero Hour while not a heavy "Crisis" series was at least a fun jaunt and Kyle Rayner was an interesting character from the get go. But back to Green Lantern 0. That second half with Kyle just physically beating up Parallax and destroying OA with a single blast from a standard power ring "overcharging" the planet 🤢. It was like Marz had an editor on the phone driving him nuts, daily.

Uff, both Kyle AND Guy Gardner were awesome.
Guy Gardner Warrior is one of the more underrated cómics of the time.
His fricking Bar for "supes" was were you got to meet the superhero scene at the time.
Ice was a Queen.
And Guys new Powers and enemies we're the bomb.
Honestly I like him more as "Warrior" than as a lantern of any color.

Might be nitpicking, but why would Hal have to fly all the way back to the green lantern planet to return his ring? How would he be able to get back to earth? If the rings are able to move on their own, why not just summon the ring back to Oa while Hal is on earth

I actually am kind of intrested in how the orginal idea would have played out. An elseworlds stand alone graphic novel or minseries could give the basic idea. I know the obvious changes to the staus quo could only be guessed at.

This is one of best DC stories ever produced by this Publisher. I wished we had more tales of Hal Jordan gone bad as Parallax.
This also allowed Kyle to shine as a new Green Lantern without the Core and Guardians to back him throughout the Universe.

This should have never been retconned tbh because it throws away all of the meaning character development Hal Jordan had during the Spectre 2001 where he tries to redeem himself by being the host for the Spectre. Geoff Johns is my mortal enemy

I didn’t know this was how Kyle Raner was introduced. That’s pretty cool. I remember that Costume design as a kid considering it was one of my favorite action figures.

That’s normally why when people talk about green lantern, I either will think of Kyle or John. Not really Hal, and I find it interesting that originally he wouldn’t have come back if they decided to keep Him as the specter.

Emerald Twilight is the original notion of die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

It was the 90s. The extreme 1990s. They killed Barry Allen in the 80s, and this didn’t come out of nowhere, I do recall the end of Coast City/Engine City story.

I really believe Emerald Twilight made Hal Jordan an interesting character. A guy who has for decades been, let's be honest, really wishy-washy far a guy with incredible willpower, finally wants something for himself. Jordan hit a point where his morality and that of the Guardians were too far apart, and he can no longer accept their leadership. Decades of friction pour out in a single moment, and for just a moment, all restraint is gone.

He finally gets to show his will, independent from the will of the JLA or the Guardians. He proves himself worthy of the name "Green Lantern" in the same moment that he destroys the entire thing. Forget Authoritarian Superman or Batman but he's Evil now, Parallax is what actually happens when a hero goes "bad." Hal regrets his actions pretty much for the rest of his life, but he can't go back. In that instant, he's not a hero anymore.

The whole Parallax thing was not really Hal’s fault. He was heavily influenced by the Parallax entity.

At least they took some risks hasn’t been much since new 52 for dc they use to be known for killing hero’s now hardly anyone dies and probably for the worse.

People can quibble about the execution of the storyline itself, but the general outline of Emerald Twilight has the skeleton of a compelling story – the greatest GL in Corps history falling from grace to become a villain like the previous greatest GL before him, as a new and more relatable rookie takes up the mantle to stop him (again, much in the same way Hal had to with Sinestro). Most of its flaws are a product of how rushed the writing is because of the last minute nature of the story's production and Ron Marz not having the time to really hash out the finer nuances of a better told version of this outline due to his joining the project so late in process.

His fall could have been told better, but it wasn't an inherently bad idea, and the subsequent stories with him as Parallax are actually quite good; to be honest, Hal was never more compelling than when he was Parallax, and outside of Johns' first few years with him post-Rebirth (ie up thru SCW), since coming back from the dead he's gone back to being pretty much the same kind of bland ass character he was pre-ET who was so generic, uninteresting and the opposite of compelling that necessitated the ET revamp in the first place to keep his book from getting cancelled (again, which was like the third time it would have happened, btw…) at the height of the Comics Bubble, a time when printing superhero comics might as well have been a license to print money.

The Hal fans can whine and cry about this story all they want, but the problem with this story isn't the concept it's in the execution, no matter what they try to argue to the contrary. They can't argue with this stat either: Kyle's run as the star of the book for 137 consecutive monthly issues is the longest any GL title has ever gone without a multi-year hiatus/cancellation/relanch, and the sales for the bulk of Kyle's run as the lead were better for longer than much of the preceding 80's/90's era with Hal as the star, as well as a big stretch of the post-Sinetro Corp war Johns issues.

They need to get it through their heads that outside of their small niche, nobody wants their bland-as-cardboard protag as the main GL in the book(s) and driving all of the storylines for the GL book(s). He's fine as a guest star/League member/occassional, one-off story arc lead character, but he can't carry a solo book as the star. The past 5-6 decades of history when it comes to GL series sales have proven this time and time again. Kyle doesn't just deserve his own book again, his book should be THE GL series that drives all of the broader GL storylines and any other GL spin-offs should be subservient to it instead of some book that sits in its own little corner of the DCU no one cares about where nothing in it really matters because it doesn't really interact with any of the other DC books for the most part like the last few times he's had his own book; it's far past time Hal got shuffled off into a book like GL New Guardians whenever he gets a book again because the dude just cannot carry the sales anymore (if he ever could, really).

Fringing is perfectly fine like it or not it works it gets results and the inverse just doesn't land the same (same with submissive male sidekicks and mansels in distress just doesn't land). Most of us are fine with most cliches and tropes as long as it works to strengthen the story and the character's journey. Might annoy certain groups but then be those are the breaks.

A story so good I can't help but dismiss Geoff Johns attempts absolve Hal of all guilt.

The last issue of emerald twilight had a cool as hell cover, GLOW IN THE DARK
